Distribution Channels

For Example

Let’s say you are selling sunglasses to different kinds of distribution channels like retail stores; large retail supermarkets like Safeway or Albertsons, superstores like Wal-Mart or Target and even convenience stores and gas stations like 7-ELEVEN, Shell stations, ARCO AM-PM, and even independent liquor stores or independent mini markets.

Don't forget to visit our special web page that will teach you how to master your sales and distribution channels

How would you offer DSD to the store? Well, let’s say they are already your customer.  You or your distributor would visit the store, look for your sunglass rack or display, see what has sold, see the condition of the glasses and the display and then clean the display and stock it with new sunglasses.  Arrange any name or pricing signs as needed.  This would be typical for a DSD full service sunglass operation.

How can you benefit from DSD for your products?

With DSD you have 2 major choices.  Sell to a distributor that has DSD or provide DSD on your own.  If you provide it on your own you need your own vehicles, employees and warehouse.  If you use distributors you will ship it to their warehouse and they have their own trucks and employees.

There are 2 main types of DSD

There are 2 primary ways of doing DSD.  One is full service DSD and the other is dropping cases.  When you drop cases in a store you don’t service the account, merchandise or stock the product.  You just leave the cases.

Advantages of DSD

Advantages of DSD depend on the type of DSD and who is doing it.  Are you or your company doing it or are you selling to a distributor who does DSD?  This is important because if you do it you will place all your attention to your product.  If you use a distributor it will really depend on the type of distributor you are using.  How many products do they have, how many stores does each sales person visit per day? Do they merchandise the stores?  How do they merchandise, does the salesperson do it, the delivery person or a merchandiser?

There are many other types of sales to c-stores and supermarkets.  To find out how to sell with Warehouse Programs to supermarkets visit our supermarket sales and wholesale distributin page.   In this site you will learn how to sell truckloads to supermarket chains without using your trucks or employees.
